Interesting image appearing when I searched for Virgin Media in Bing.... Didn't seem to happen on another PC.  Doesn't happen in Google.  Curious.

NEST Thermostats - Getting a Replacement and Setting it Up

Getting a NEST Thermostat Replaced I've had a NEST thermostat for a little while now.  About 4 months ago, we added a third central heating zone to our house, and got a third NEST thermostat. All was well, until one day, I noticed the third zone wasn't appearing on the app.  A bit of resetting, fiddling and following of the trouble-shooting on the NEST website came to nothing, and so I thought I'd try the live chat.  I wasn't hopeful. But, do you know what?  They were ace.  They didn't make me re-do all the troubleshooting again, they asked me to try something else which wasn't on their website and they concluded that the WiFi chip was fried.  They said they would ship a new, replacement NEST thermostat and then I could return the old one. And two days later it arrived.  I was amazed. But, the reason for my post, which may help you, is that I struggled to setup the new one.  I plugged it in, assumed it would see the heatlink and...

Why I Won't Ever Buy A Radiator From ScrewFix

TLDR =  I'd buy it from Wickes instead. This is quite a saga, but details the issues, complications and frustrations I had when I bought two radiators from ScrewFix.  One was 1.6m x 60cm and was pretty heavy.  I would struggle to get that into my car, so wanted it delivered. Monday 2nd Dec 2019 - Ordered 2 radiators and a roll of reflective foam from the Screwfix website.  These were to be delivered the next day before 6:30pm.  Delivery is free over a certain amount.  They also threw in two free TRVs.  There was a note that the driver would need a hand with the radiators off the van. Tuesday 3rd Dec 2019 - Reflective foam and TRVs turned up with a courier.  Despite being in all day, a "sorry we missed you" note was pushed through the letter box at 9:01pm.  Nobody knocked or rang the doorbell.  Frustrating, as I'd hoped to install the radiator that night. Wednesday 4th Dec 2019 - nobody was at home all day, so got a "sorry we miss...

How to Remove Your School or Work Account From WIndows 10

Image
I struggled to get rid of an account which was on my Windows 10 machine.  No matter where I looked, nothing seemed to give me an option to remove it.  It was an account which was no longer needed.  I had the password, so tried logging into it and seeing if that was an issue, but, as I expected, it was not an issue. A lot of sites suggested go into (Windows Settings --> Accounts) Email & Accounts, then click the Workplace or School Account and choose remove/delete.  This option didn't appear for me, and lots of others out there too.  Many people suggested the issue was that the account was no longer logged-in.  Again, this wasn't part of my issue, but wondered if it might be relevant. A lot of sites suggested using a "Disconnect" button, but that wasn't there either. So in the end, I realised I needed to go into "Access Work or School".  Then you see the email and accounts stuff, just like above, but here the Disconnect button appea...

Add a Facebook Shortcut to a GroupYour Android Phone

Image
I use a few groups in Facebook. I like to be able to navigate to some of them quite quickly, so I put a shortcut to them on the home screen page (or desktop) of my Android smart phone. However, the next time I want to do this, I can never figure out how to do it, so end up spending ages looking for how it's done. To save me time, and to help you too, this is how you add a group shortcut to your android's screen. Go into the Facebook App Go into the group (sometimes that can be awkward to find!) Click on Admin Tools (this is the key bit) - it's the badge/star icon in the top right of the group's screen/page.  It looks like this :-     Then Choose "Your Settings" And "Add to Home Screen" You can then drag the shortcut wherever you want it. Hope that helps!

Google Search Console is Full of Contradictions

Why is Google Search Console full of contradtions? Playing by the rules for SEO should be easy.  Search Engines want something in a certain format, they want to be able to present the user who is searching with the best result for them. So I try to do what they ask, and use their tools to check and validate what I'm doing.  An important page is a bit slow to load - speed it up.  Title tags duplicated - revise the content or remove the duplication. Just recently, I've been looking at a site on Google Search Console.  It has a "Inspect Any URL" search bar at the top.  So after looking and seeing no unexpected errors for the site, I think I'd try the search on the home page.  Three green ticks!  What more could you ask for? Looking at one of the ticks ("Coverage") in more detail, there was a throw-away comment: Indexed, not submitted in sitemap That's the most important page, how have we missed it off the sitemap?  A quick check of the si...
